Hi, my name is Melanie (she/her), and I’m a licensed social worker.
Growing up, I had many different interests that kept me active and engaged—I also found it difficult to spend time alone. At 15, I was diagnosed with depression and generalized anxiety disorder, and began working with a psychologist alongside medication. This early experience shaped my understanding of mental health, both personally and professionally.
In my mid-20s, significant family changes intensified my existing challenges. Around the same time, I developed health issues that required two abdominal surgeries. Although I was told I would recover within 1–2 weeks, my healing process was much longer. I took a month off work and experienced chronic pain for over a year due to severe abdominal adhesions. During this time, I built a multidisciplinary care team to support my recovery.
Movement had always been an important way for me to manage anxiety, but living with chronic pain meant I could no longer rely on it as a coping strategy. I often felt stuck in my body, dismissed, and misunderstood. Over time, through consistent care and a focus on reducing inflammation, my pain gradually improved.
I was also diagnosed with IBS, GERD, SIBO, and HPA axis dysregulation. Through this journey, I’ve learned how to manage my anxiety and no longer experience depression in the same way I once did.
I also have lived experience with fertility challenges. After a long and emotional journey, I became a mother to a beautiful boy. Parenthood has opened a new chapter in my life—one that continues to ground me, challenge me, and deepen my commitment to supporting others through similar experiences.
